Last week we told you (http://chicagoist.com/2009/07/09/stolen_violin.php) about the violin that was stolen from Lori Ashikawa's home while she slept. Well, you can move back from the edge of your seat and get on with your life because the violin has been recovered and given back to Ashikawa. Chicago Breaking News has the somewhat curious details (http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/07/missing-gagliano-violin-recovered-by-unknown-citizen.html):
On July 9, an unidentified person called the victim and directed her to a building in the 200 block of South Michigan Avenue, according to a police press release. The victim notified police, who accompanied her to that location and recovered the violin. The case and bows were also recovered.
Our guess is the burglar didn't expect such hoopla over a stolen violin. No arrests have been made, and no further details are available just yet, although the 200 block of South Michigan also happens to be the home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (http://www.cso.org/). Clearly this was either an inside job or an insidious plan by the CSO to raise violin awareness. Or not. We just really wanted the story to have a sexier ending.
The most important thing, of course, is that media saturation has brought what's probably the only crime that's occurred in Chicago recently towards a resolution.
Thanks for the tip, Matty
